Terrace Cabin

New Delhi, Delhi, India

Nature often inspires my designs, as exemplified by the custom-built terrace cabin in New Delhi, India. This creation was centered around an existing planter box with a tree growing through its center, serving as both a direct derivation and organic inspiration. To incorporate the tree within the cabin, we divided the space into two distinct areas: a closed lounge and a semi-open bar space.

A raised platform and metal frame and pillar structure were designed to accommodate electrical wiring through the hollowed frames. The lounge section was clad with bison boards, finished with wood grain louvres, and outfitted with large double doors and window systems to allow natural light to flood the space. This enclosed area also features ceiling fans, spotlights, strategically placed power and switch points, HVAC installation, and smooth grey stone tiles covering the raised platform and semi-open space.

To utilize the tree and planter box for more than just aesthetics, we extended the planter box to create a custom working bar with the tree as its focal point. A sink and open shelves were installed on the working side of the bar, finished with granite and a stone slab countertop, and enhanced with LED light inserts under the counter.

The roof structure, built at a slight angle for surface runoff and a modern, stylish look, led to the creation of a custom gutter system. The interior ceiling was designed flat for lighting purposes and clad with cherry wood grain louvres. A large sunroof was added above the tree to provide natural light and enhance the design. Finally, the remaining terrace ground was covered with artificial grass and additional planters to complement and complete this unique form-and-function design.
